help from a stranger

baby you woke up in a cold sweat
trying as hard as you can to catch your breath
those awful images still oh so vivid in your mind
you look at the clock and cant believe it, its only half passed nine
and so you go about your day, half here and half far away
still flipping through those pictures that seemed so clear at the time
are now clouded and distant, cant seem to remember why youd cried

maybe it was a familiar a face, one you prefer to forget
or just something you ate before youd gone to bed
a black mad hatter crouched in the corner
his dreads blowing in the wind from the subway flying by
looking at the ground, you approuched him and his tired eyes
like an innocent child, asked why it was he was looking so down
but he just met your gaze for a second and kept staring at the ground
as if there was some hidden truth between those crooked bricks
all of a sudden he flashed bright eyes with the devils grin

said little girl, what are you doing here at this time of night?
shouldn’t you be in your bed tucked in by mommy so tight?
the city is no place for a child like you
you’ve got a womans body but your eyes don’t say the same
they tell me you’ve been wandering around this station for quite some time

and so you tried to remember how it was you got there
cant quite recall ever paying the bus fare
he finally stood up, so tall over you
took your hand and said lets get you home
this is no place for such a young soul

mister, you said, why is it that youre helping me?
started to think maybe this was a wolf dressed as a sheep
his steps were quiet and slow, didn’t really leave any tracks
upon the crooked bricks on that old dusty path
his dreads kept dancing in the wind, but the subway long had passed
possibly a ghost, a spirit, a guardian angel, or maybe just a mirage
an old memory of a familiar face youd long forgot
he grinned a white smile, this time not as sad
put his arm around your shoulders, so he wasn’t so bad

suddenly when you dropped your gaze from his angelic face
you only then just realized hed disappeared without a trace
a bright white light was now blinding you
the wind coming in from all directions leaving you deaf
you let out a cry but no one was around to  hear you what youd said
the ground started shaking, ah, now you know where you are
standing on the middle of the tracks infront of the next charging car
